Another question I get asked a lot is if someone goes bankrupt, does it affect their partner or spouse.
If they have no joint debts or assets the stock answer is no, it does not affect them, but the reality is in some ways it does affect the partner or spouse not going bankrupt.

While he led a very interesting life and career, his death also is interesting for many reasons:
What Should I Do?

What Should I Do
Lately I have been speaking to people who in explaining their financial situation ask me what should they do?
I outline for them the options they have and then they ask again, what should I do? They want me to tell them what to do or which option they should take.
I cannot do this, all I can do is advise and explain what may be the stronger option(s) based on what they have stated they want to achieve; but the decision is theirs to make.
Yet, many people want someone to just say to them, do this, this is what you need to do.

One thing I have heard for years, but also more recently, is those who are in an IVA or a Debt Management Plan, and either did not include all their debts, or obtained additional credit and debt, whilst in the repayment plan.
Not a good position to be in.
So what has occurred is that now by taking on additional debt, they can no longer service the repayment scheme, IVA or DMP, they had placed the other debts in; or that they had not placed all their debt sin the scheme and now are experiencing trouble servicing it all.
So what can happen?

I have had a few calls over the past few months where the person phoning clearly needs to go bankrupt, and they know it as well.
Most of those calls are people really just looking to me for confirmation or validation that their decision is the correct one.

I was looking at the exchange rates today between the Pound and the Euro and as of the day I looked £1 was 1.17 in Euros.
Not looking good, especially if you holiday over in any EU country.

I read something I found sort of funny the other day that has been going on in America, and probably here as well. It was to do with people no longer able to afford their cars; this is either to the rising costs of petrol, upkeep, or the payments.
So what do they do: they burn, bury, drown or leave the car somewhere unsafe and report it as stolen.
Sinking With the Sharks

I read a story the other day that a ‘think tank’ group warned about the increase of people needing to borrow money from loan sharks; this is due to the credit crunch and many banks and doorstep lenders not making new loans or rejecting more than usual.
The group felt that as people who need to borrow money cannot obtain the funds through legitimate sources, they will turn to other outlets, such as loan sharks.
Makes sense and necessity being the mother of invention, people will find what it is they are looking for, one way or another.

I read some funny stuff and some wacky stuff, and this seemed to fit both bills; it also had a moment of truth in it as well.
A local police force has asked the public’s help in reporting people who seem to be showing excessive ‘bling’ during these troubled economic times.
Now we all know what bling is; or do we not?
