I have been reading of some wild and wacky stuff people are doing in these troubled financial times; the credit crunch.

I read where people are taking their children out of day care, pre-school, nursery, whatever you want to call it, and also getting rid of their pets!

Wow!  Those are major changes, especially getting rid of a pet, or for many of us, a family member.

But local charities like Animals in Need have reported a rise in the number of pets, in particular dogs, that are coming through their doors.

We all know pets can be expensive.  Who would have thought years ago there would be insurance for pets.  Insurance for pets (in a Peter Kay voice), but yes, it is here.

So if people are struggling for their basics, food, heating their homes, life’s essentials, certain members of the family, pets, take a back seat.  No pun intended.

And if you have a family member, sorry pet, that has a medical issue, it can cost even more.

Everything in price has gone up from food for pets, to medical care, to the time needed to walk them, as we could be working over and making a bit more.

This people, is sad!

But true.

Also, what about people who lose their homes and can no longer find an accommodation that allows pets?   Another issue to be dealt with; it gets complex these times and issues.

As for parents making the decision to take their children out of costly private schools or day care, that is something as a Financial Counsellor we have looked at and discussed with clients for years.  Taking a look at the basics and moving outward with expenditures, what areas can be reduced or removed.  That is a personal decision for a parent or guardian to make.

Of course also in these times I have been reading about many of the local cash convertors or pawn shops doing a brisk business, on both sides of the coin.  Many people are selling items they no longer need or want to free up some cash, and others are looking for bargains in purchasing those items.  There also are many free web sites such as Gumtree and Craig’s List, that allow people to post and sell items for free, and in many instances you may get a better price trying to sell it yourself.

Just some more observations I have made during these interesting economical changes we are in.
