No Cheap Holiday
I was looking at the exchange rates today between the Pound and the Euro and as of the day I looked £1 was 1.17 in Euros.
Not looking good, especially if you holiday over in any EU country.
The rate for USD was £1 would equal $1.625, so a bit better.
But in looking at holiday destinations, while there are cheap flights to EU countries, the costs whilst there are what get to be staggering.
While food and drinks used to be cheap, those prices have not changed, so a meal and a pint may have been cheap due to the high exchange rate, now it seems more costly than staying here.
Which causes me to wonder if more people will now take their holidays staying in the UK, as the exchange rates may be prohibitive to travelling abroad.
I am unsure if any studies will be done and even so it will be a while before we would know any real findings.
I do recall a time when the dollar was so weak to the Pound you could fly to New York for a few days, go shopping and return and it was reasonably cheap.
Now while the Pound is still strong to the dollar, the flights seem a bit pricy, maybe due to fuel costs.
Of course many people may not get to holiday at all as I read unemployment is still at an all time high.
The holiday may be in just looking for work, which is not a restful holiday.
So it may just be we spend our weekends and bank holidays having barbeques in the garden, or visiting free museums and the like.
